5 Tips for Creating a Strong Content Strategy

by | Nov 2, 2012 | Internet Marketing Strategy, Web Content

A strong content strategy never goes out of style. When you create great content you position yourself as an expert, increase your readership because people will want to read your content and share it with their friends and you have a piece of content that you can reuse on multiple platforms.

To help you get started with your content strategy, here’s a roundup of recent content tips from our 1 Minute Marketing videos.

5 Tips for Creating a Strong Content Strategy

Post Turkey Lesson for Marketers

Although Thanksgiving was last month, this tip is still super useful. When you create a great piece of content, it should be repurposed and reused. Get as much leverage as you can out of that content.

For example, if you write an awesome how-to blog post, break down the tips in the piece and post each tip to Twitter. Or if you have a Flickr stream where you post event photos, pull out some of those photos and use them in your newsletter. You don’t always need to be creating new content if you can find ways to use existing content in different ways.

Marketers Are Outliers

When generating content ideas remember that marketers are outliers. Something that seems simple and obvious to you isn’t to everyone—it’s only simple and obvious because you’re immersed in it every day.

This means that when putting together your editorial calendar, go back to your personas and think about what questions they may have, what technologies they may be stuck on or what advice they may find useful.

Content Strategy for Educational Institutes

If you’re an educational institute trying to attract or engage students and you’re looking for content ideas, try looking at business, marketing, or HR blogs to see what they/re writing about and put a student spin on it.

For example, a lot of HR blogs have interview tips. This could be translated for students by writing a post with tips for interviewing for your first job out of university.

Writing How-To Articles

When writing a blog post there are certain things that are important to include: use a title that will capture readers’ attention and start with a question that will set the stage and indicate that your article will help answer your readers’ questions. You should also use short sentences or bullets that are easy to read, use images to breakup the text and end with additional links for readers to find more information.

Read Aloud Your Writing

This tip is simple but important for quality control. Reading aloud your writing will make any awkward sentences much more obvious.
