Think Like an Olympic Coach: Train Your Marketing Team to Win

by | Aug 25, 2016 | Internet Marketing Strategy, Underwire Newsletter

Check out these 3 marketing tips that can help any team be top performers.

I was inspired by the feats of all those Olympic athletes in Rio and what lessons can be applied to top-performing marketers.

Here are 3 tips that any team, regardless of skill, can use to avoid the bumps and ensure their marketing initiatives are a success.

1. Set Goals Like a Pro

Marketing opportunities are limitless, which is a blessing and a curse. Research continually shows that successful marketers have a documented strategy, meaning that write down their goals. They focus!

I like SMART goals: specific, measurable goals that are achievable and realistic within a given timeframe.

Specific, measurable and time-based are key attributes. Sports psychologist talk about the “growth mindset” and improving in small increments over set intervals.

Can you become 1% better at something [email open rate, social media traffic to your website, conversion rate] on a monthly basis?

2. Play to Your Strengths

Striving for perfection is admirable, but also impossible. Elite athletes recognize the things that help them achieve success. They work on amplifying and leveraging those components. Do that for your business, campaign, event, product, service, etc. Why do people choose you? Start with your strengths and make them even stronger.

3. Break It Down

Dreaming big means breaking down the complexity. The path to any vision is a series of steps. Break down your ultimate plan into a series of smaller, manageable steps, focus on one thing at a time, and stay the course.

Bonus: Celebrate the win. If you don’t enjoy the win, where is the reward for all that hard work? Take a break. Enjoy. Get back at it.

The 2016 Olympics may be over but my favourite interview is immortalized on the web. Check out Darragh Maloney—in stitches—interviewing silver-medalists in double sculls Gary and Paul O’Donovan. These Irish lads are non-stop jokers from Skibbereen.
